tiny house parking misconceptions VS realities 🏡
Many tiny house on wheels dwellers find parking on other people’s land—backyard, farmland, etc. There they typically connect to the landowner’s utilities and pay a monthly lot rent.
PROs:
âś… for THOW dweller: a place to live
✅ for landowner: extra income to put toward their mortgage, property taxes, etc. Added security by having another set of eyes on the property. Help with land maintenance—work/trade or neighborly helping hand
âś… landowner & THOW dweller: enjoy a micro-community environment with opportunities for friendly neighborly interactions
✅ for greater community: providing a housing opportunity for more people on existing land & using existing infrastructure—environmentally low impact, not taking away from any available market rate housing stock, creating much needed housing diversity
CONs:
✅ can be a legally tenuous arrangement (land use laws in many places don’t allow this. Code enforcement is complaint driven so 1 neighbor or passerby complaint could lead to fines, etc.)
✅ lack of a legally binding rental agreement (if THOW parking spot isn’t permitted)
